very interesting...
Well here we are… this is interesting. Make sure you read on.
It’s happened before and it will happen again. We had a show booked with a church and were set up to play, even excited to play. I got the call the other day. They told me that one of the people at the church saw an advertisement of us in the newspaper. They took note that we played at “an establishment that serves alcohol”. Needless to say the show got cancelled.
Now, weather you met us at a bar or a church or a university you already know that we do a wide variety of shows. We play everywhere. We started out playing only churches, but there was no way we could support ourselves on what we were making and frankly we did not want to limit ourselves so we expanded.
Now back to the issue. I’m not terribly upset or doing this to get back at the church, I just want to have this discussion in the open so we can all benefit from it. My mother-in-law works at the Royal Bank. That’s not a church. Beyond that she serves all kinds of people that don’t go to church. I’m sure that she would still be welcome to “minister” in a church if she could sing (and I’m not saying she can’t). We offer a service to people who would wish to hire us and we do a good job of it. Sometimes we serve people that don’t go to church. I find it awkward and weird that someone in the church today could find that offensive. Bar owners never cancel shows when they find out we play churches! Alcohol seems to be part of the issue here, but let me just say that it’s the abuse of alcohol that should be the issue… and I know about that first hand. My father was an alcoholic.
My point. The rest of the church would have really enjoyed our show. It’s a small tragedy. I think it’s time for us to all get over ourselves. Love your neighbor, there is more to life than our personal hang-ups.
