church??

Well... I guess I just thought that it’s time for an update. Things are good. We are working on a new approach to what we do in the church scene. Rob and I have been talking a lot about why people are afraid to share their story about God, and why Church has become a four letter word to some. (yes I realize that there are six letters in “church”!)

We have been talking about how the church has moved its self away from anything that our current world culture can understand. Now, there are always exceptions and I’m not saying that your church sucks! Our Christian culture for the for the most part is not making it easy for the rest of the world to understand us. We use big (and little) words, for example, that people who haven't been exposed to church just don’t understand. We seem to think that formulas will solve our problems. ...if he says that, then I can say this... Sometimes we impose our faith on people in the form of a debate. I remember being ready to debate my faith... Sometimes I guess thats how it must be approached... But think about this... Do you really think that the average person want’s to get into an argument about your faith? To top it all off personally, I’m not all geared up to debate my faith anymore.

I switched gears a little while back. I’d rather just love people. What did Jesus say about love? Love God, love your neighbor, they will know you are a Christian by your love. People think there is something different when you treat them with the utmost respect and , you guessed it, love. We are all testing the waters... insecure, unsure as to how we will be received, and how many times have I said this now, but we need to make a decision everyday to make a difference one person at a time. Love them. Show them you care. Be open about who you are and why... That is very important.

  • AHHH! CHURCH. I love this subject. While billions hate it because millions abuse it ... I love this subject.
If we could get this one area (church) right, then we wouldn't need blogs like this. We also would not be so stressed into performing like Christian puppets. The essential ingredient in church is not lost just totally under utilized, that being the Spirit.
Church sucks today! Why, because while we ask for His help, and cliche the Holy Spirit into our services, I believe we do it for duties sake. Hey the proof is in the pudding!
Some may say... "oh but our church isn't like that, I really like our church for this reason and that and our pastor is fun and relevant", and yada yada they go on and on. But church has nothing to do with US liking it, its all about those who don't come liking it.
In Matthew, in the context of fruit bearing, it says that those in our communities (who are not coming out) should thank the God of heaven for us. WOW! How do I get those who don't come to love what we got goin on?... by loving them unconditionally, sharing with them, encouraging them, emulating Christ.
That also means taking heat in His name too, cuz He did say that would happen. Love is best exemplified in the tuffest of times. The cool thing about this love is that it doesn't come from us but through us by the Holy Spirit. Oh it can come by us, but it's a waste of time compared to when it comes from God. It's a lot less tiring too.

  • I think the big problem in the church (building or body, you pick) is that everyone forgot to love God. Ask everyone you see at church on Sunday morning why they're there and how many will answer *honestly* that it's their love for God that's brought them there, not a routine or a feeling of obligation or any other trap we fall into on all kinds of levels.
Everything should start and end with our fellowship with God, right? Worship is an expression of our love for Him, obedience is in response to His love for us, prayer, bible study, music, softball, laundry, basket weaving are all a part of our relationship with Him.
When the church as a body comes to the church as a building with the intention of teaching and instructing and directing its congregation outside of God's love (out of pride or ignorance or whatever) that's when we're getting into problems. You can tell who's preaching on their own and who's led by the Spirit by how their words ring in your ears (provided we're in the right place as well).
I say scrap the sermon, the pews, the nasty orange carpet, the works, move the whole shooting match to a chinese buffet restaurant and tell the waitress just how much God's love means to you.

  • Ya thats good and all... we need to love God before we can truly love others and if we're not, fagget about it... the prob is that not everyone likes chinese ... but it does taste better than christianeze.
Don't forget too ... God started and endorses church so it must be a good thing ... we just have to get back to what He was thinking about in the in the 1st place.
