Just humor me… I’m trying to stay hip with the kids lingo these days. (OK just kidding). I thought that I should post an update. Rob has been working out and has put on at least 50 pounds of muscle, and I hit an early midlife crisis, or something, and started listening to all my old metal tapes. One of those is true!

So I thought I’d fill you in on something. I’m going to just send this out there, and you can feel free to send it right back. (Remember Anchor Man?:) If you are not loving your neighbor, then you are directly contributing to world hunger, poverty and war. Huh? Take a minute to think about it. Where did you think it all began? In the heads and hearts of men… or man. Individuals. Is it hot in here? No, really… I’m office is hot, I have the sun shining in on me and our air conditioning isn’t installed yet.

Back to the point. What have you done today to reverse the hate effect? Did you know that hate tends to travel faster and with more force than love? Well, let’s put it this way. When you are in a good mood, how easy is it to pick up on negativity and let it take over? In contrast to that, when you are in a bad mood, how easy is it to just let it go and turn into Mr/Mrs Happy? I would say that being positive is harder to maintain.

Today. Today you can choose to spread a little more love around. I find the more that you spread the more you get! Ya, because it’s not a penance type thing! It’s GOOD for you… good and good for you. Question is, will you do it or not? I mean actually be active about loving total strangers (and and not so strangers). It’s harder than you think… but not really. Try it, you’ll know what I mean.

Let me know what you think.

Deni

PS, if you don't have our album “Anthems for the Lonely” what are you waiting for??? Go to the store at thebetween.ca and get it… you’ll love it, and we really appreciate your support!

Hello hello!

How the heck are you? It’s been a while. Soooo… wacha up to? Do you like stuff?

I’ll tell you something. There has been some big changes in my life in the last while. I wrote a song about it, seeing as, thats what I do. Here are the lyrics.

I knew I had to say a few things first
But I thought that I’d loose you again
As I thought I realized my own life I’d immersed
And it was me letting go of your hand

And I’ll aim for you again
I always thought that I was just another broken man

Oh the times that we’ve spent drifting
like those desert sands still shifting
The wind blowing through our young hair
Searching ‘round for nothing, but on the edge of feeling something
One step closer to that breath of fresh air

And I’ll aim for you again
I always thought that I was just another broken man

And I? Oh I feel fine… time to let it go, get it off of my mind
And I? Oh I feel fine… time to let it go, get it off of my mind

There it is! We performed it for the first time in Sudbury a few weeks ago and it went over really well. I keep coming back to the fact that placing blame on God, or other people for our issues and short comings is such a pit fall. And (here’s the big one) that there really IS a God. I’ve always known that… just sometimes I can FEAL it better than others. But this question now pops into my head all the time. “What am I going to DO about it??”

All for now,
Deni

blooooog!

Ever wonder what happens to a band when they don’t blog?? Nothing really… they just keep playing shows and sharing the love.

As you may know, Rob and I have been working really hard to get the final release of Anthems out. We’ve thought hard about the fact that the things we do impact the people and the environment around us, and have decided to take an unconventional approach to the packaging of our album. There are Thousands upon thousands of people with a theBetween album… either that or a few people that are hoarding thousands of albums for themselves… that’s a lot of plastic waste!! Wait till you see the packaging for it, it looks cool

HEY! I just wanted to say hi… the new web page is coming soon, and a nice e-mail announcing the release of Anthems. And a ticket for free hugs at shows. …What else… oh ya! I almost forgot! Rob is going on national television to wrestle a grizzly bear! We figure he can take it, he’s been training hard and is up to 147 lbs.
This is Rob traning to fight the bear.

Stay in touch!

Deni

David Reed, Hawksley Workman, and theBetween

HEY!

Something cool just came up. I guess I just thought that it’s time for an update. Things are good. We are working on a new approach to what we do in the church scene. Rob and I have been talking a lot about why people are afraid to share their story about God, and why Church has become a four letter word to some. (yes I realize that there are six letters in “church”!)

We have been talking about how the church has moved its self away from anything that our current world culture can understand. Now, there are always exceptions and I’m not saying that your church sucks! Our Christian culture for the for the most part is not making it easy for the rest of the world to understand us. We use big (and little) words, for example, that people who haven't been exposed to church just don’t understand. We seem to think that formulas will solve our problems. ...if he says that, then I can say this... Sometimes we impose our faith on people in the form of a debate. I remember being ready to debate my faith... Sometimes I guess thats how it must be approached... But think about this... Do you really think that the average person want’s to get into an argument about your faith? To top it all off personally, I’m not all geared up to debate my faith anymore.

I switched gears a little while back. I’d rather just love people. What did Jesus say about love? Love God, love your neighbor, they will know you are a Christian by your love. People think there is something different when you treat them with the utmost respect and , you guessed it, love. We are all testing the waters... insecure, unsure as to how we will be received, and how many times have I said this now, but we need to make a decision everyday to make a difference one person at a time. Love them. Show them you care. Be open about who you are and why... We spent a good week discussing the future of theBetween (which looks bright) and how to market the new album. We came up with the album cover, drank a little coffee, hung out in the studio with one of my heroes (Derri Daugherty) drank a little more coffee and came out of the week with some great ideas and a fantastic sounding album. You WILL love it. (A little Jedi mind trick there).

We are starting to book up again! Look for us in a town/city/barn near you. If you would like to bring us into your church or any other place that you would like to hear us give us an e-mail at booking@thebetween.ca

So Rob and I found this crazy place that we just fell in love with. It’s like a huge jungle but it’s all inside a huge dome! What will the Americans think of next?! :) But it was huge man! Why would we go outside if we could get it inside? We walked there every day for (you guessed it) coffee and more brainstorming. Here’s a picture of the place… crazy.

Derri’s studio was great and he did such a great job. I think it was great to have someone else’s hand on the project. Of course we took pictures… here you go.

This is how most of the mixing happened. I was very comforting to Derri... he had a lot of work to do in a short time. Christian community is a wonderful thing and we hope that you all continue to love and support each other, as we should. You’ve learned so much and now you need to apply it. I’ll tell you something. Don’t be afraid of being who you are as a Christian. Your job is to be open about your self with the people around you… people will take it or leave it; it is not you they are rejecting. On that same note, people will be drawn to you because of that “something different” inside of you… show them that they are loved and tell them how you know it.

Love you Rod! Ya’ll stay in touch now ya hear?

I have a rule. Most people around me know my rule. But this rule only comes up once a year for about a month and a bit. My rule is this: if I pay for the coffee, the big prize is mine. I don't really care about the small stuff... winning a coffee or a donut. You can keep the small stuff. The plasma TV or even the $1000 prize I won't really complain about not getting. But the Rav4? If I paid for the coffee, and it rolls up to be a Rav4, it's mine!

But you know what, if you buy me a coffee, my rule changes a little. I keep whatever prize I roll up. Makes perfect logical sense in my mind. OK, I know it's not really fair. And deep down I guess the rule should just be that no matter who pays for the coffee, whoever actually drinks the coffee and rolls up the Rav4 should be able to keep the Rav4. Better yet (if the winner is extra gracious), he should sell the Rav4 and give half the money to the one who bought him the coffee in the first place. But really, he is not obligated to do so.

Did you read about the story in the news the other day about the 10 year old kid who found a cup, couldn't roll up the rim, asked for help from a 12 year old standing nearby and it turned out to be the Rav4? The 10 year old's dad got there and figured that he would sell the Rav4 and give the 12 year old's family some of the money. But noooo... the 12 year old's parent figured that they were entitled to the Rav4, because without the 12 year old kid helping, the 10 year old would have given up and not rolled up the rim. And so they are going to court. Does any of this make sense to anyone? Maybe a contract should be signed before anyone rolls up a rim so there is no discrepency as to who actually gets to win the prize!

My guess is that if that cup was only a winning coffee, there would be no argument. The 10 year old kid would be taking home a nice free coffee to his/her dad. No questions asked. Why is it that as soon as we enter a significant amount of money into the equation does the formula change? I could get on my high horse and look down at the parents of this 12 year old kid and say, "c'mon, you have to be serious... just look at yourself... everyone is reading the greed all over you... get over it... it's the 10 year old kid's Rav4 fair and square". But in reality, if I was that 12 year old parent, while on the outside I would probably just let the other family have the prize, on the inside this nasty little voice would be saying to me... "you deserve that rav4, it's yours, forget being nice, we're talking $27,000 here! you derserve it more than them".

No wonder this world is full of poverty. It's because we all have this notion that we deserve better than the next guy. And frankly, millions and billions have been killed over the centuries because of this notion. I'll be honest with you, Jesus lived a rather different way. He wouldn't serve money... and said it had to be either serve God or serve money... can't do both. I don't want to serve money. Maybe if we all stopped serving money, then millions of people wouldn't be starving.

Something dawned on me about a month ago while I was listening to Bono's speech at the US National Prayer Breakfast (watch it here...). Eliminating poverty is not just a good thing to do. It is right and just. We deserve to eat no more than the people who are starving all over the world deserve to eat. I think it all boils down to this point... not gonna eliminate greed and poverty while we are serving money. According to Jesus I guess that leaves us with one alternative...

rob

change change change

Hey… I was just thinking about change… and how people say that you “can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. I was wondering why we apply that to humans? We all say how hard it is to change and some of us use the “I can’t change now” attitude as an excuse not to. Why?

I would hope that in this day and age one would want to work towards an improved version of ourselves. And frankly, I would challenge that you are never too old to change… I see it as a necessity. We all have quirks. Some are mostly non-offensive, and some are hard for other people to deal with. We all have personality flaws, and we all need to be accessing our lives and accepting the fact that we need to change.

And change is good! Maybe hard, but good. After all, it’s what is changing in us everyday that people take notice of, and it is our lives that bear witness to what we believe in, and our relationships with the people around us that is important in the long run.

All for now,
Deni

New Painting

Hey you! We are trying out some new things, and it is definitely turning out to be a nice big full record… and as a little added bonus we are getting other people involved. Jono is on it (of course… lots of didge), and as well as Steve Koning. One of the coolest things is that we are getting someone to mix the album for us! Derri Daugherty will be that man and we couldn’t be more exited! He’s a bit of a hero of mine (should I admit that?) Anyway… we’ve added another little surprise as well.

I’m slowly getting to know a really great guy from California and he has a very wide taste in world music, he also plays some pretty crazy instruments! His name is Loren, you can check out what he does
here
. Have you ever heard of a “Toyo”? Think a HUGE pan flute… here is a pic.

The sound is amazing! So Loren is adding some Andean sounds to or Record, like I said, I really think you are going to like it.

Oh, here is a pic of Loren!

All for now… more rants later :)

deni

Possessions

Possessions… We have a lot of stuff don’t we. Do you watch TV? If you do, you are being constantly bombarded by ads telling you to buy stuff. The accumulation of stuff over the years that we get tends to add up. I was thinking about how some people accumulate nothing but a bowl or two and a set of pants and a shirt because they are born in a country that is war torn or just in complete poverty.

I’m not into guilt trips! We are very fortunate to be able to live in a country that allows us to live the way we do. We really have so much. I don’t think that the answer is to get rid of everything and live like a monk… although… you might look really funny if you shave the top of your head, try it; I’ll take the photos.

I just think that a little awareness is a good idea… and if you can support companies that are trying to make a difference all the better. For example maybe buying things made in sweatshops in China (or any other country) is not a good idea… the Gap… Old Navy… I'm just as guilty as everyone else...

It’s the small things that we can do that start to make a difference isn’t it? Not everyone can be a social radical :) More on sweatshops later I think... this was a bit of a ramble

deni

Art!

Well I finally did it… I put up my paintings for everyone to see. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while now just never got around to it. Look to the right on this page you’ll see a link to “Denis’ Art”… that my art. In case you don’t really know that you can leave comments on the blogs, you can… and I would love it if you would leave comments on my paintings, let me know if you hate them, or love them.

I think that Christians have dropped the ball regarding art in our communities. I can’t even remember once as a young artist being encouraged about my art by the church. Art is super important. I believe artists are as important as doctors and lawyers in our communities. Think about this… how do we gain information about ancient societies? Their art. Their writings. Support art, encourage art, and create art, even if you are not an “artist”. It’s good for you to be creative, it’s good for you to share, and it’s good for you to be active in your community artistically.

Denis

Christmas is good for you. So there.

Yup, here we are again going through another Christmas… I love it… but I get the impression that some people hate Christmas. Last Christmas Rob and I asked some of the people in some of the places we played if they wanted to hear and Christmas tunes, and they all freaked out! No one wanted to hear any at all! I was a bit shocked. This was at pub shows mind you so I guess that people who like Christmas don’t like pubs much, the church shows all requested the Christmas music ahead of time. (OK, if you are one of those people who would have said that you wanted to hear Christmas music in the pub... sorry for generalizing :) I for one believe in the Christmas story, you can read it in the Bible in the first couple of chapters in Matthew. I love Christmas.

I was just thinking about that because this year Rob and I won’t play any Christmas music at all. We aren’t playing one show this December, we are recording. Both of us are hip deep in it. It’s been a lot of fun collaborating and using our strengths to make a good record. I love working with Rob, can’t think of a person I would rather work with really… unless Amy Grant needed a session bassist and a singer songwriter kind of guy to work with. OK just kidding about Amy Grant… or am I Shane...

“Merry Christmas, I love you God is above you.”
Deni

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.thebetween.net/blog/2005/12/christmas-is-good-for-you-so-there.html' title='Christmas is good for you. I’m sure you do as well, either that or your still growing up… I guess I’m still growing up as well

I remember when everyone started saying “I want to be an individual”. It probably wasn’t the first time in history that people were saying that. People started trying to “be themselves” to be different from everyone. The more I think about that the more I think that we are so wrong… it’s a waste of energy. I think that it is a selfish way of thinking.

Let me explain… the more we think “I” and “me”, the more we focus on ourselves, the more we try to be individual the more we set ourselves apart from everyone else. It can be isolating. We are already individuals. I think it’s time we stopped thinking “individual” and started thinking “community”.

Instead of thinking “how can I be different” we need to start thinking “how can I make a difference in the lives around me”

Seems like a better use of time to me! Anyway… “Just a thought” (as I recall someone in my past used to say quite a bit.)

Deni

Make Poverty History

Did you know that the minimum wage in Canada used to be around ten dollars?

Did you know that Mc Donald’s has been a major factor in lowering and keeping the minimum wage down?

Why would Mc Donald’s want to keep the minimum wage down? Well I guess that’s an easy question to answer… they basically only pay their employees at the minimum wage… imagine the money they save if they can keep the minimum wage down.

How did they/do they, keep the minimum wage down? Well guess what… despite all our happy Mc Donald’s memories as children the company is a super power only interested in the money making machine and has a lot of money to spend to make things happen the way they want it to happen. In fact the company tries to suck impressionable children in to eating their food and creating happy memories so that they will grow up and want to bring their children to eat there as well. That’s why Mc Donald’s has made toys and “Happy meals” a very high priority in marketing… in fact Mc Donald’s is one of the largest toy distributors in the world. Thought they were only a fast-food chain?

As theBetween we realise that we can be a voice for the things we believe in. All over this world we live in people are suffering because of poverty… and yes even in Canada.

Children are suffering because we have a very low minimum wage, and Canadian child tax benefits aren’t offering enough in the way of support. How can we make a difference?

www.makepovertyhistory.ca is a great place to start. Get educated and sign the on-line petition. Canada is suffering and many of us don’t even know it. The reason for having this blog is so that Rob and I can say what’s on our mind and connect with the people that are making our career happen.

This is a subject that has long been discussed by Rob and I on long road trips to and from our shows. I thought that it might make sense to type it out one day…

Ministry is one of those words that, believe it or not, can carry a bit of a negative weight to it these days. At its core the word ministry is how we should all be living our daily lives. It’s not our job, or our volunteer work, it’s our lives. But who wants to tag that word to our lives… the word that represents to some an ingrown out of touch way of “reaching out” to more churchgoers. And what kind of non-Christian can relate to church lingo and culture that they have never been exposed to before… and can be, frankly, a little strange? The very word ministry falls into the “church lingo and culture” category that the majority of our people can’t even understand.

So many people are searching for something spiritual, and so many Christians have no way of relating to the world and its people because they haven’t exposed themselves to anything but today’s modern church culture; a culture that is partly out of touch with its current surroundings. When I was growing up I was scared into believing that people were going to hate me for being a Christian, so I hid it a bit… only let it out when I thought that I was safe. It’s so easy to find that safe spot in the church… go to Christian Bible College get a job in the “ministry” never ever see the light of day and live our whole life in the comfort zone. People don’t hate Christians; they hate the symbol of Christianity that has evolved over the last couple of centuries because religion has been used as a seat of power for power hungry men.

What about just being who we are? That’s sort of “in” these days anyway! So many people are trying to be individuals in a world that feels like we may just be another spec on the pile. That’s what I mean about the word ministry… it’s our life on our sleeves. What I’m trying to say is that we should just be who we are as Christians… just be open and stop worrying about what other people are doing and thinking, touch the people around us with a genuine love and treat them as special, open the doors of communication and break down the walls that Christianity has managed to build so strongly in the name of religion. What are we afraid of? People respond positively to love and community.

deni

Man jumps from ferry, saves woman, loses favourite hat...

Ok, so we have lots of good stories from our tour in Turkey that I'm sure we'll continue to blog on, but one story really stands out from the rest. It has to do with Denis being a hero. Now, first off I should say that Denis would never tell this story unless he was asked about it, since it involves his heroics. So here's the story...

Our second last concert on tour was on the European side of Istanbul. After the show we were making our way back to the place where we were staying, but it involved taking a ferry from the European side to the Asian side of Istanbul. There are tonnes of these ferries and they run all day long. In any case, we took one at around 11:00pm and halfway through an older lady jumped off the boat. The ferry turned around to go find her in the big ship, jellyfish infested sea waters. We all heard her yelling for help and then as soon as Denis spotted her, he jumped fully clothed from the ferry, swam a 100 metre dash to get to her, and rescued her from drowning!

I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you that it was a little scary for a little while, but all worked out. And Denis eventually made it to the Asian side (which apparently was a little tricky as he didn't speak any Turkish). As for the lady, she was rushed off in an ambulance and that's the last that we've heard. Alls we know is that if Denis hadn't jumped in, or had've waited another 20 seconds to jump in, she would have drowned. I guess God had it all figured out. The only catch was that Denis lost his favourite hat...

Rob

We had a great time

Hey hey… glad your checking out the blog! If you got the latest newsletter you know a bit about what is happening in theBetween’s studio. We are busy… actually we have a deadline! We have lots of work to get through before we are ready to go to Nashville for the mixing, but I guess the deadline thing is good… it’ll get us in motion for completion.

I have a few photos that I’ll post in this blog from turkey. OK… I have to say, and this may intrigue you, most of the toilets aren’t like ours at all. Without getting into too much potty humor and other details I’ll say that they are different, not better or worse than ours. It’s like a hole in the ground really. That’s it. Ya, there are “regular” toilets for us westerners but for the most part they use these “squatters” instead. Don’t picture a literal hole in the dirt, they are porcelain and they flush… they are just a little different that’s all…

Anyway… the food was amazing. The biggest difference is that instead of butter they use olive oil. Instead of salad dressing, olive oil. If there is any reason it would seem to put anything on anything they tend to use olive oil. They even use olive oil for their oil lamps. Lot’s of the sauces that have cooked meat or veggies in them are tomato and you guessed it… olive oil. Now whenever I smell olive oil I can vividly picture so many of the great meals I ate over in Turkey.

The people are wonderful and treated us to many a cup of “Chai” (Turkish tea… really strong stuff served in a small handle-less cup… usually they water it down with water to taste).

hope you are well, keep checking for more photos!

deni

Turkey

I’m sitting in my living room relaxing… and working I guess. Just thinking about our upcoming tour… we leave in three days. I’m really looking forward to it, ok, I’m also thinking that I’m pretty hungry right now. Couple of random thoughts there… I’ll tell you why I’m hungry… all I had to eat for supper was a tray of sushi.

The new album is coming along. We have a title, and 6 songs mostly down, and quite a few more potentials. We also know who is going to mix the album. We managed to hook up with our first choice. We’ll be heading down to Tennessee in March to have the CD mixed by Derri Daugherty from the Choir, Lost Dogs, he was also was involved with the acclaimed “City on a Hill” Worship albums… not to mention one of my musical hero’s growing up! We both grew up listening to the choir and I would site them as one of my biggest influences (not that we really sound anything like them). Check out www.thechior.net they are one of the pioneers of Christian rock.

I guess that’s enough typing for now… look for updates from Turkey (if we get anywhere near a computer) and more about the next album in a future new letter.

Peace,
Deni

good ol' camp

Hey ya’ll…

We are gearing up to head over to turkey very shortly… pretty excited really! Have fun and keep in touch!

Deni
